Paul had a long day before he got to us. Really appreciated his efforts and getting our AC back up running well.

AC not keeping up?
Most AC calls come on the first properly hot week of the year, when a system that's been sitting since last August gets asked to do its job. Here are the common signs that something's wrong:
- Air coming out of the vents that's barely cool, or warm
- An AC that runs all afternoon and never gets the house down to temperature
- Ice on the copper lines or the indoor coil
- Water leaking around the furnace
- An outdoor unit that hums, buzzes, or won't start
- Short cycling, where it turns on and off every few minutes
Some of these have simple causes. A clogged furnace filter or a thermostat set to "on" instead of "auto" can make an AC seem broken, so check those first. Ice on the lines usually means poor airflow or a refrigerant leak, and a unit that hums without starting often needs a capacitor or a contactor. We'll find out what's actually going on, and if your AC is getting older, you'll get a price to repair it and a price to replace it, and you can decide from there.
Before you replace your AC, price a heat pump too
A heat pump is an air conditioner that can also run in reverse. In summer it cools your home exactly the way central air does, and in winter it flips around and heats it. So if your AC is near the end of its life, find out what a heat pump would cost before you replace it like for like. Natural Resources Canada (opens in a new tab) notes that a broken-down AC is often when people start thinking about a heat pump.
The cooling you get is the same either way. What changes is the heating. A heat pump can carry most or all of your winter heat, and it can come with a CleanBC rebate. A straight AC replacement can't, because there aren't any rebates on central air conditioners.
Have a look at our heat pumps page to see how they handle a Shuswap winter, and we'll give you a quote for both and all the information you need to make an informed choice.
Getting a new AC right
Getting the size right matters more than anything else with air conditioning. An AC that's too big cools the house fast, shuts off before it's pulled the humidity out of the air, and wears itself out turning on and off. One that's too small runs all afternoon and still can't keep up on the hottest days. Natural Resources Canada (opens in a new tab) recommends sizing from a cooling load calculation rather than a rule of thumb. On a simple house, like a bungalow on a slab, the sizing is straightforward. On a bigger or more complicated one, we run the full calculation. Salmon Arm's building code design temperature for summer is 33°C (opens in a new tab), so that's the afternoon we size your system for.
A central AC also depends on your furnace, because it uses the furnace's fan and ductwork to move cool air around the house. ENERGY STAR (opens in a new tab) suggests that if your furnace is more than 15 years old, you consider replacing it at the same time, since a new AC on an old blower won't reach its rated efficiency. We'll look at both before we quote, so the price covers the whole job, and it's a good time to look at a dual fuel system too.
Hi everyone, I gave 5 stars to EcoFlow for AC installation in my house because of: 1) very good professional communication, quick response time 2) competitive price 3) installation was completed in one day as scheduled with high quality. Happy with their service. Strongly recommend.
Yearly AC service
An AC that's short on refrigerant or has a dirty outdoor coil runs longer, costs more to run, and tends to fail on the hottest day of the year. A yearly service in the spring catches those problems while you still have time to fix them.
On an AC service we:
- Clean the outdoor coil and clear away leaves and debris
- Check the refrigerant charge and look for leaks
- Check the airflow and the indoor coil
- Clear the condensate drain
- Tighten the electrical connections and test the capacitor
- Check or change the furnace filter
Between visits, keep about two feet of space (opens in a new tab) clear around the outdoor unit, and check the filter every month or two through the summer.
When the smoke rolls in
Wildfire smoke has become part of summer in the Shuswap, and your furnace and AC can help clean the air inside your house. Interior Health (opens in a new tab) recommends a MERV 13 filter or better during smoke season, with the furnace fan running continuously so the air keeps passing through it, and keeping a few spare filters on hand before the smoke arrives. Not every older system can move enough air through a thicker filter, so ask us to check yours before you switch.

Meet the crewCommon questions
How much does central air conditioning cost in Salmon Arm?
Every house is a little different: the size, the ductwork, and whether the furnace needs replacing too all change the price. We'll come out and look, the estimate is free, and you'll have the price before any work starts. Financing is available through Financeit.
Can you add air conditioning to my furnace?
In most homes with a furnace and ductwork, yes. The outdoor unit connects to a coil that sits on top of the furnace, and the furnace fan moves the cool air through the ducts you already have. If your home doesn't have ducts, have a look at ductless mini-splits on our heat pumps page.
My AC is older. Can it still be repaired?
It depends on the refrigerant, which is printed on the label on the outdoor unit. Units that run on R-410A can still be serviced and recharged, though new equipment is moving to newer refrigerants and an R-410A system can't be converted (opens in a new tab) to use them. Units old enough to run on R-22 are harder: R-22 isn't made anymore, and only recycled or reclaimed R-22 (opens in a new tab) is available for repairs, so a leak in one of those usually means it's time to replace. Either way, we'll price the repair and the replacement.
How long does a central air conditioner last?
Natural Resources Canada (opens in a new tab) puts it at 15 years or longer with regular maintenance. If yours is past that and needing repairs, a replacement usually makes more sense, and if the compressor has failed, it almost always does.
Are there rebates on air conditioners?
Not on central air conditioners. There are rebates on heat pumps, which cool your home the same way and heat it in winter too. Our heat pumps page has the details.
My AC quit in a heat wave. Can you come?
Yes. Call (250) 832-5846, and we'll get to you as soon as we can. Outside weekday business hours there's a callout fee, and it's higher than the daytime rate. You'll hear what it is on the phone, before anyone gets in the truck.
Get ahead of the next heat wave
